Final music video for vimeo from Ria on Vimeo.
This is the final draft of my music video. It has been improved from the last two versions as I have focused on ensuring the lighting is perfect and clear - in result my shots appear in high quality. I have edited it so that it fits with the pace of the music and have put special attention on the mise en scene to ensure it fits with the era I wish to portray. One thing I added was titling of the artist, the song and myself as director, as this is how it would appear when on MTV or VIVA or any other music TV station, telling the audience what they are watching.
MICRO ANALYSIS OF MY VIDEO
Camera
v Establishing shots of the location – the sun coming through the
trees, the river – reflecting the mellow mood as well as conforming to typical conventions
of the Indie Folk genre.
v Low angle shot of the actress stepping into shot – forces audience
to focus on the mise en scene as it’s a close up of her brown boots.
v Shot looking at the artist through the gates highlights how the
viewers of the music video might be trapped in their own ways, forgetting the
carefreeness of childhood.
v Focus pull from flower to the artist walking through high grass –
gives the sense of a journey
v Low angle shot of the artist’s shoes, walking towards the camera –
highlights how the viewer is looking at life from the characters point of view.
v Close up of the artist touching the ivory tree leaf – highlights the
Indie Folk convention of a sense of nature.
v Slow motion edit shot of the shadow on the grass – makes the
audience think about their own identity and remember when they were young and careless;
giving a sense of nostalgia.
v POV shot of what the artist sees (trees and the path ahead) –
putting audience in the characters shoes.
v Close up shot of the artist looking at herself in the puddle of
water – highlighting the sense of identity, looking at who you are and who you
were
v Extreme close up of the fly buzzing around a flower – concept of
nature, innocence and beauty reinforced
v Low angle shot, looking up at the artist – making her the focus of
the video – emphasising how fans will look up to her.
v Low angle shot of girl kicking up leaves – reinforcing concept of
childhood
v Slow panning down shot, establishing new location of the thatched
cottage.
v Close up of hand on chain and then the bell dinging
v Slow pan up the artist from foot to head – POV shot of what the
mother sees
v Close up of the artists face – allowing audiences to see the
characters tears
v Extreme long shot of character running towards the gate crying –
creating distance between the artist and the audience – isolating the character
v Mid shot of mother looking out the window sadly and walking away – separation
between daughter and mother.
Editing
v Dissolve transition – text appearing on shot (Artists name, song
name and directors name) – conforming to music videos that appear on music
channels.
v Continuity editing – artist steps up on bridge then close up of
artist on bridge – helping to make the story flow
v Slow cuts of shots in order to fit with the slow pace of the song
v Continuity of artist touching tree – allowing audiences to view
action from an extreme long shot and a close up view
v Slow motion edit shot of the shadow on the grass – makes the
audience think about their own identity and remember when they were young and careless;
giving a sense of nostalgia.
v Continuity editing of artist when she bends down and looks into
puddle – making sure each shot flows with the other, fitting with the graceful
music.
v The sound of the bell dings over the music as the shot of the bell
is shown
Mise en scene
v LOCATION OF WOODS/MEADOW – fitting with the typical conventions of an
Indie Folk Music video as it’s a focus on nature
v Bright white/yellow lighting on shots of girl walking around –
emphasising theme of sunlight which reinforces the happiness.
v Artist is dressed in neutral, natural colours such as browns,
beiges, yellows and dark oranges – reinforcing the 50’s era the video is set
in.
v Short dress and little boots emphasise the theme of youth and
carefree attitude
v Make-up such as the flicked eyeliner and the backcombed quiff fit
in with the 50’s era
v LOCATION OF THATCHED COTTAGE – emphasise the target audience are
those who live in the country – meaning they will be able to personally
identify to the video – also emphasises why the artist was in the country
throughout the video
v Mother dressed in an apron – conforming to the typical 50’s
stereotypical role of the mother being a housewife
v The lighting inside the house – the slash of light over the mother
and the window, but the rest in dark lighting, emphasises the negative, sad
mood within the room – reflecting the mothers worry
Sound
v The song “People Help The People” emphasises the theme of caring
which is shown within the video as the mother is fretting for her daughter,
worrying about where she is. It is a mellow, slow paced song, fitting with the
pace of the song and the innocent, graceful tone of the video
v The tweeting birds at the beginning of the video highlight the
theme nature and beauty however are also an aural representation of the artist
of the song, “Birdy”.
v The dinging of the bell emphasises the era – as they would not have
had doorbells, however also fits nicely with the shot of the bell, making the
scenes more realistic.
